PREVIEW: Playoff History on Tacoma’s Side

The past two times that the Tacoma Rainiers have made the playoffs, they have found themselves facing these same Sacramento River Cats. In 2001, en route to a PCL Championship, the Rainiers dropped the opener to the visiting River Cats before winning three of the next four, with two of those wins coming on the road.

In 2005, Sacramento took the first two games at Cheney Stadium before the Rainiers went in to Raley Field and swept the River Cats right out of the playoffs.

Tomorrow night at Cheney Stadium, Rainiers fans get a bonus postseason Tasty Thursday, where you can get great deals on $1 hot dogs, soda, ice cream and coffee.

Enjoy $2 Miller Lite and Miller Genuine Draft in the terrace level beer garden, the place for singles to mingle every Thursday night during the regular season and the postseason.

The Tasty Thursday Beer Garden opens at 5:30 p.m. with music and beer specials sponsored by Miller Lite.

PREVIEW: Finale Has Playoff Implications

A win by the Rainiers tomorrow night would go a
long way towards ensuring that the season-ending series against first-place Colorado
Springs will be a meaningful one. A Tacoma win combined with a Sky Sox loss
would mean that the Rainiers would have to take three of four from Colorado
Springs this weekend.

If the Sky Sox finish off a sweep of the
Portland Beavers however, Tacoma would have to finish the season with a
four-game sweep of the front-running Sox.

PREVIEW: Hernandez Takes Hill to Halt Skid

After pulling into a tie with the Colorado
Springs Sky Sox for first place in the Pacific Coast League Pacific North, the
Rainiers have now lost two straight to the Salt Lake Bees, who have now run off
six straight wins.

But there is reason to hope tomorrow night, as righty
Gaby Hernandez takes the Cheney Stadium mound having won five straight
decisions and each of his last three starts. Over those last three outings,
Hernandez has posted a sparkling 2.89 ERA, allowing just five runs in 19.2
innings with 11 strikeouts.

Hernandez’s opponent, Mike MacDonald, is 3-2
with a 6.20 ERA in his last 10 appearances, but in his last start on August 28
in Colorado Springs, he tossed eight innings, allowing five hits and one run at
Security Service Field.

MacDonald has faced the Rainiers three times
this season, including two starts. In those three games, the 6-foot-1,
215-pound righty out of Camden, Maine has gone 2-1 with a 6.35 ERA.

tomorrow night absolutely white-hot, having won nine straight games on back-to-back
sweeps of Fresno and Portland to move into a tie with the Colorado Springs Sky
Sox for the division lead.

The season comes
down to these final eight games, as Tacoma faces off against a hungry
third-place Salt Lake–coming off a four-game sweep of the Sky Sox–and then
takes on the Sox themselves in the final four games of the season.

PREVIEW: Rainiers Go for Three in a Row

After taking the
first two games of the series from the Omaha Royals, the Rainiers will look to
make it three of a kind with lefty Chris Seddon on the hill.

Seddon has had a rough go of it in his
past two starts, going 0-1 with a 7.36 ERA, but in the three starts before
that, he went 2-1 with a 1.59 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 17 innings.

Seddon will face major-league veteran
Lenny DiNardo, who has gone 4-2 with a 2.79 ERA in his past 10 games.

25-year-old righty is 2-0 with a 1.23 ERA, striking out 15 and walking just
three in 22 innings of work.

He will face an
Omaha offense that ranks second-to-last in the Pacific Coast League with a .256
batting average and is tied at third-to-last with a .328 on-base percentage.

in his last 10 starts, going 5-2 with a 2.64 ERA, striking out 38 and walking
just 18 over 58 innings pitched. Seddon is tied with reliever Eric Hull for the
team lead with seven victories on the season.

His opponent Ramon Ortiz has faced the Rainiers twice this
season, throwing 4.2 innings in relief, allowing two hits, two earned runs and
four walks while striking out five.

The Grizzlies are just 13-18 against southpaw starters this
season, but are hitting a respectable .276 against lefties on the season in

Beavers Face Uphill Fight in Tacoma

The Rainiers look to make it four wins
in five tries this season, tonight against the rival Portland Beavers.

The Beavers have lost 11
of their past 12 games against Tacoma dating back to last season, and over those 12
contests, the Rainiers have outscored Portland 88-36.

Starter Will Inman will face a particularly difficult task,
as he takes the hill looking to get the better of a Tacoma lineup that bashed
him for five runs on six hits on June 16 at PGE Park in Portland.

The latest chapter of the historic
Tacoma-Portland baseball rivalry makes its first appearance at Cheney Stadium
this season. The Rainiers and the Beavers already squared off at PGE Park from
June 15-17, with Tacoma taking two out of the three contests.

Tonight’s starter, Doug Fister, took
the win in the first tilt, scattering seven hits over 5.2 innings of work,
allowing two runs while striking out four. Over the past 50 years, Tacoma owns
a 361-345 mark against teams from Portland.

NOTES: With the trade of infielder Mike Morse last week, the Rainiers were left with few options up the middle, and so the Mariners called up an old friend to take his place: shortstop Oswaldo Navarro … Navarro hit .261 in 104 games for Tacoma last season on his way to being named to the Pacific Coast League All-Star team … Speaking of the PCL All-Stars, the league is slated to announce its roster for this year’s game at some time today, and rest assured, Rainiers Rants will have the news for you as soon as it becomes available.
